Celebrating Our Impact

At Starlight Healthcare, impact is not always measured by the biggest moments.

Sometimes, it is someone feeling confident enough to attend an appointment they once avoided. It is a person learning a new skill, taking greater control of their daily life or beginning to feel safe in their own home. It is a young person building trust with the adults around them. It is a family feeling reassured. It is a staff member growing in confidence and stepping into leadership.

Across our Domiciliary Care services, Adult Supported Accommodation and Children and Young People’s Supported Accommodation, we see progress in many different forms.

This page is our opportunity to celebrate that progress.

It is a reflection of the people we support, the teams who work alongside them, the partnerships that make good support possible and the everyday moments that can create meaningful and lasting change.

We are proud of how far we have come. We are equally committed to continuing to listen, learn and improve.

Domiciliary Care Supporting People at Home

This year has been an important one for our Domiciliary Care service in Southampton.
Our team has continued to support people in their own homes, but behind the scenes we have also spent a great deal of time looking closely at the quality of the care we provide. We have asked more questions, listened more carefully and strengthened the way we check that people are receiving the support they expect from us.

One of our biggest areas of focus has been making sure that care remains personal. We know that a care plan can tell us what support someone needs, but it does not always tell us what makes them feel comfortable, what they look forward to, how they like things done or what a good day looks like for them. Those details matter.

Throughout the year, we have introduced stronger quality monitoring, regular welfare calls and more opportunities for people to tell us what is working well and what they would like to change. We have also increased our focus on staff observations, practical competency checks and ongoing learning.

For our team, some of the most important moments have been the everyday ones. A familiar staff member noticing that someone is quieter than usual. Taking extra time when a person is anxious. Supporting someone to maintain a routine that matters to them. Acting on a concern early rather than waiting for it to become a bigger problem.

We are proud of the progress made within our Domiciliary Care service this year. We have grown, we have learned and we have continued to raise our expectations of ourselves.

Most importantly, we have kept listening to the people who trust us to come into their homes and support them.

Adult Supported Accommodation More Choice, More Independence

Our Adult Supported Accommodation services have continued to grow across Bristol, Southampton and Stafford, and this year has given us plenty to be proud of.

A big focus for us has been independence. Not independence as a vague goal written into a support plan, but looking properly at where people can have more control over their own lives.

We have supported people to take on voluntary roles, explore employment, build confidence in the community and become more involved in planning their own weeks. We have worked with people on cooking, budgeting, travel, appointments and maintaining their own homes. We have also started more detailed work around medication independence, including individual transition plans where someone wants greater responsibility but needs a safe and gradual approach.

We have made changes to our own systems too. Keyworker work has been strengthened across our services, with a much clearer focus on goals, outcomes and protected one-to-one time. We want to be able to show what support has actually taken place and, more importantly, whether it is helping someone move towards the life they want.

Some of our proudest achievements this year have come from people doing things that once felt out of reach. Starting voluntary work. Returning to the gym. Getting through an important appointment. Learning a new route. Buying a phone. Making decisions about their own support. Speaking up when something is not working.

We have also supported people through some extremely difficult periods this year. Our teams have worked alongside social workers, mental health services, advocates, families, police and other professionals when situations have become complex. We have learned a lot from those experiences and continued to improve how we respond to risk, crisis and changing needs.

There is no single version of independence, and we do not expect everyone to move at the same pace. Our job is to understand what matters to each person, be clear about risk and keep looking for the next realistic step forward.

That is the progress we want to celebrate.

Children and Young People’s Supported Accommodation Growing Confidence and Preparing for What Comes Next

Our work with children and young people is built around relationships. We know that trust is not automatic and that, for some young people, accepting support from adults can take time.
Over the past year, our teams have supported young people through changes in education, relationships, employment and plans for adulthood. We have focused on being consistent, keeping expectations clear and making sure young people have a genuine say in decisions about their lives.

One example we are particularly proud of involved a young person who moved away from the local area after securing work. Rather than seeing the distance as a reason to step back, the team adapted the support around what was happening in his life. Daily contact was maintained alongside planned face-to-face visits, with staff travelling to see him and continuing to support his safety, stability and longer-term plans.

For us, this mattered because the goal was not to keep a young person dependent on a service. He had found work and was taking steps forward. Our role was to recognise that progress while making sure support did not suddenly disappear at a point of major change.

That approach reflects what we want our services to be. We want young people to build skills, make decisions, take opportunities and prepare for adulthood, while knowing that support remains consistent when life changes.

We have also continued to strengthen how we listen to young people and how we respond when things become difficult. We want our teams to look beyond the immediate behaviour, understand what may be happening underneath it and keep working with the young person rather than giving up when progress is not straightforward.

We are proud of the young people who have taken steps forward this year and of the staff who have continued to show up, adapt and find ways to make support work around real life.

Looking Back, Moving Forward

When we look back over the past year, there is a great deal to be proud of.

Across our Domiciliary Care services, Adult Supported Accommodation and Children and Young People’s Supported Accommodation, we have grown, changed and learned. We have strengthened how we listen to people, how we support our staff and how we check the quality of the work we do.

Not everything has been easy, and we would not want to present it that way. We have supported people through difficult periods, responded to situations that have challenged us and learned where we need to do better. That learning is part of our progress too.

What stands out most is the people.

The people we support who have trusted us, challenged us, shared their views and worked towards their own goals. The families and professionals who have worked alongside us. The staff who have stayed late, travelled further, asked difficult questions, spoken up when something did not feel right and kept trying when the first approach did not work.

We are proud of the progress made this year, but we are not finished.

We will keep listening. We will keep learning. We will keep raising our expectations of ourselves.
And we will keep celebrating the impact that happens every day across Starlight Healthcare.
